The Los Angeles World Affairs Council, a highly prestigious institution whose membership includes leading entrepreneurs, business people, academics, and public opinion leaders from Southern California, has chosen the Ambassador of Greece to the United States, Vassilis Kaskarelis, as its Diplomat of the Year for 2011. The annual Award honors the lifetime achievements of selected members of the international diplomatic corps, who have a history of service to their countries and a record of respected international associations and affiliations.
The Diplomat of the Year Award was first bestowed in 1990 and has since then been awarded to the Ambassadors of Australia, Germany, China, France, Great Britain, Israel, Japan and Russia amongst others. Selected diplomats typically represent countries that have been central to current foreign policy issues.

The Award will be bestowed to Ambassador Kaskarelis at a special Diplomats Dinner to be held in the spring of 2011, when, in addition to recognizing the honoree’s accomplishments and contributions to the strengthening and improvement of relations between the United States and Greece, it will also be an occasion to celebrate the culture, history and continued importance of the Greek nation.
