President Barack Obama has spoken to Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras (TSEE’-prahs) and congratulated him on his party’s success in recent elections.
The White House says the leaders spoke by phone Thursday. During the call, Obama said he looked forward to working with the new Greek government as it works to implement economic reforms.
Greece’s new coalition government formally assumed its duties Wednesday, pledging to enforce the spending cuts and reforms its creditors have demanded while softening the pain on its austerity-weary population.
Obama also pledged U.S. solidarity with Greece and the European Union in response to the surge in refugees and migrants, and reiterated the U.S. commitment to helping Syrians and others in need of humanitarian relief.
