Petros Vassiliadis, For Panorthodoxcemes

The parliament of Ukraine decided to officially ask the Ecumenical Patriarchate for the autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

Of course, as quite prominent theologians of this country have noted in several studies in the CEMES website for the Holy Synod (panorthodoxcemes.blogspot.gr), the Orthodox ecclesiastical situation in this much- troubled in the last decade country, is quite complicated. But this development gives new dimension to the Pan-Orthodox Synod. With this decision of the Ukrainian parliament, which was made public today, the Ecumenical Patriarch is requested to cancel the act of 1686 (Tomos), with which the Diocese of Kiev was moved (by the then Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate) in Moscow, to convene a Pan- Ukrainian council to overcome the existing schism, and give a new Tomos for the autocephaly of the Ukrainian Church.

This must have been the reason for the official visit of President Porosenko early in March to the Ecumenical Patriarch. It is quite interesting, however, that this event was described by that the anti-patriarchal (anti-ecumenicalal, but also with links with the Moscow Patriarchate) Greek electronic sites, as a provocative act by Phanar ahead of the Pan-Orthodox Synod (!). And this is deplorable and against national interests The parliament of Ukraine decided to officially ask the Ecumenical Patriarchate for the autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
