Preparing a new conference on Cyprus in Geneva?
UNSG Guterres to meet Cyprus leaders in New York on June 4
President Nikos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa are set to meet with United Nations Secretary-General Antonia Guterres in New York on Sunday, June 4.
Akinci had tweeted on Wednesday night that he had accepted an invitation to meet with Guterres in a tweet following a telephone call with the UN Secretary General.
Minutes later, Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides confirmed that Anastasiades had received a similar invitation and that efforts were being made to set a date for the meeting.
“The Secretary-General looks forward to welcoming both leaders in New York next week,” said UN spokesman in Cyprus Aleem Siddique.
The latest developments come after UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide announced that Turkey was willing to attend a conference on Cyprus in Geneva without any conditions and that she would be willing to discuss the system of guarantees.
