Greek Cypriot side satisfied with Geneva II decision
Greek-Cypriot diplomatic sources have expressed their satisfaction with the result of the three-hour meeting between the two Cyprus leaders and UNSG Antonio Guterres.
It was decided at the meeting that a second Geneva conference will take place in June, in an attempt to push the stalled negotiations decisively forward.
A diplomatic source said that “the goal of President Anastasiades was achieved”, and that “the chapter of safety was pointed to as one of the most important chapters, whose resolution will determine further progress”.
According to the source “the negotiation will move forward in a parallel manner, however, without progress in safety there will not be progress in other chapters”.
The source also said that it’s possible that the Geneva conference be pushed to a date after June.
It is also worth noting that the meeting went ahead without interruptions, as had happened at previous such meetings, with both Anastasiades or Akinci refraining from contacting Athens or Ankara.
According to the same source, the preparation for the second Geneva conference will mostly be made by UN Special Envoy to Cyprus Espen Barth Eide, with the goal of reaching to all parties to create a document which will be signed by participants.
President Nicos Anastasiades mentioned during the dinner that all chapters must reach the same level of agreement, which means that the chapters of territory and security must be within range of agreement for dialogue to proceed.
“The moment of truth is approaching, and Turkey must decide and state if she wants us to proceed or not,”Anastasiades reportedly said.
