Meetings with President Anastasiades and Mustafa Akinci
Eide to meet Cyprus leaders as he forges common document
The UN Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide, will be back in Cyprus on Thursday to meet with the two leaders as he prepares the common document ahead of the new Geneva conference scheduled for June 28.
Eide will meet with Republic of Cyprus president Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish-Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci to record their proposals for the common document.
“The Secretary-General’s Special Adviser Mr. Espen Barth Eide is scheduled to return to Cyprus on Thursday for meetings with both sides,” UN spokesperson in Cyprus Aleem Siddique told the Cyprus News Agency.
“In the meantime he remains in constant contact with New York, Brussels and the guarantor powers (Greece, Turkey and the UK) focusing on the issue of security and guarantees and preparations for the Conference on Cyprus,” Siddique said.
Anastasiades has instisted that agreement on a common document is a precondition for attending the conference in Geneva, whereas Akinci has pointed out that the document will simply register the positions of all parties on security and guarantees.
