Dear Friend,
On June 17, the American Hellenic Council launched its #PrayForLesbos campaign, a relief effort to raise funds to help those Greeks displaced by the devastating 6.3 earthquake which hit the island on June 12, 2017. The quake, which was followed a week later by a second 5.2 earthquake, resulted in local authorities declaring a state of emergency.
In one month’s time, AHC has collected over $14,000 in aid for the people of Lesbos. Thanks in part, to over 40 generous individuals. The most recent being, Ms. Patricia Field, who has graciously donated $10,000 to our relief effort. Ms. Field, the famous fashion designer, best known for her work on the television series, Sex and the City, traces her maternal ancestry back to Plomari, Lesbos.
Next month, Board Members of the Council will travel to Lesbos to assess the situation on the ground before dispersing funds to those affected by this natural disaster. The epicenter of the European refugee crisis, the island of Lesbos has selflessly given all they can to assist those fleeing war and poverty. Now, in their time of need, let’s show our gratitude for people that have gone above and beyond for so many by coming to their aid, now in their hour of need.
