Criminalizing Politics is Dangerous

Professor Alan Dershowitz is Brooklyn native who has been called “the nation’s most peripatetic civil liberties lawyer” and one of its “most distinguished defenders of individual rights -” “the best-known criminal lawyer in the world -” “the top lawyer of last resort -” “America’s most public Jewish defender” and “Israel’s single most visible defender – the Jewish state’s lead attorney in the court of public opinion.” He is the Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law (emeritus) at Harvard Law School.  Dershowitz – a graduate of Brooklyn College and Yale Law School – joined the Harvard Law School faculty at age 25 after clerking for Judge David Bazelon and Justice Arthur Goldberg and at age 28 became the youngest full professor in the school’s long history.  Professor Dershowitz has a new book coming out this month: “Trumped Up! How Criminalizing Politics is Dangerous to Democracy”

Professor Jay Pasachoff is an American astronomer. Pasachoff is Field Memorial Professor of Astronomy at Williams College and the author of textbooks and trade books in astronomy, physics, mathematics, and other sciences. Pasachoff will be viewing his 66th solar eclipse, the most of anyone ever.  Pasachoff has carried out extensive scientific work at total solar eclipses, and has championed the continued contemporary scientific value of solar eclipse research. Pasachoff is heading one of the largest organized scientific expeditions to study the Sun, and the Sun’s effects on Earth, at the eclipse August 21, 2017. Their main observations are to study the solar corona, a million times fainter than the everyday Sun and normally hidden behind the blue sky.  Pasachoff said,  “Only at a total solar eclipse, when the blue sky goes away because normal sunlight is hidden by the Moon, can we see the corona at all this well.” “The Sun” solarcorona.com

Shaking up the New York City Council

Rebecca Harary is the Republican candidate for the for the open seat in the 4th City Council District on the East Side.  Ms. Harary is the Republican, Reform, Libertarian, Women’s Equality and the Stop de Blasio lines.  Ms. Harary identifies herself as a “Mike Bloomberg Republican.” An accomplished problem solver who transcends party labels, Rebecca has an excellent chance of capturing the seat.  She did well in the 2016 Assembly race; she received the highest raw vote total of any Republican since 2000 in the 73rd AD and received the highest percentage of any Manhattan Republican candidate since 2002.  After working for years as a successful entrepreneur, Rebecca switched gears and moved into the non-profit realm, where she enjoys building organizations for people in need. Over the last 12 years, Rebecca has founded two non-profit schools; The Imagine Academy for Autism and The Yeshiva Prep High School for children with mild learning challenges.  She recently finished her tenure as the Founding Executive Director of the Moise Safra Community Center, where she raised over $25 million for the construction of a new, state-of-the-art building on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

Ed Mullins – President Sergeants Benevolent Association – has been a member ofthe New York City Police Department since January 1982. On July 1 – 2002 – he was elected President of the Sergeants Benevolent Association by an overwhelming majority of its members. As President of the SBA – one of New York City’s most visible labor unions – and one of the largest police unions in the nation – he oversees the daily administrative and operational functions of an 11 -000 member organization with assets in excess of $180 million – he is the organization’s chief spokesman – advocate and visionary. He serves as Chairman and Trustee to the union’s Health Benefits Fund and Annuity Fund. He is a Trustee for the New York City Police Pension Fund – with fiscal holdings estimated to be in excess of $16 billion.

Congressman Daniel Donovan is a Republican who represents Staten Island and parts of South Brooklyn in the 11th Congressional District of New York.   Congressman Donovan was elected to Congress on May 5 – 2015 during a special election and sworn in on May 12 – 2015. He was elected after the incumbent Congressman Michael Grimm was convicted of tax evasion.  Prior to running for Congress – in 2003 – Mr. Donovan ran for and won the office of Richmond County District Attorney.  During his tenure – his office led the city’s prosecutors with the highest felony convictions.  From 1989 until 1996 Congressman Donovan was an Assistant District Attorney in the office of Robert M. Morgenthau.  In 1997 he became Chief of Staff to then Staten Island Borough President Guy V. Molinari.
