6 months after tax cuts, the real celebration is for America’s workers

Six months ago today, President Trump signed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act into law—the first major overhaul of the U.S. tax code since Ronald Reagan’s presidency.

The law made three important changes to help workers and small businesses. First, it cut how much money the government takes out of Americans’ paychecks. Second, it put U.S. employers on a level playing field with foreign competitors. Third, it eliminated dozens of special interest loopholes, raising $4 trillion in revenue by closing the door on corporate accounting tricks.

Tax cuts are one ingredient in President Trump’s plan to reclaim a strong and prosperous America. After years of slow recovery, former President Obama’s economic team set expectations for a new normal of sluggish growth. With the Trump Administration’s policies, unemployment has fallen to 3.8 percent, its lowest level in nearly half a century.

Good news for workers is something everyone, Republican or Democrat, should celebrate.

First Lady makes a surprise visit to Texas shelter

First Lady Melania Trump traveled to McAllen, Texas, yesterday to take part in briefings at a nonprofit social services center for children who have entered the United States illegally. She thanked law enforcement and social services providers for their hard work and asked how the Administration can build upon its efforts to reunite families following President Trump’s executive order.

The President reiterated his call for Congress to act. “Our First Lady is down now at the border because it really bothered her to be looking at this and to seeing it, as it bothered me, as it bothered everybody at this table,” President Trump told his Cabinet. “But we need two to tango. We have 51 votes in the Senate. We need 60.”

How President Trump is reorganizing the government

Today’s executive branch is not equipped to meet Americans’ 21st century needs. Job seekers have to navigate more than 40 workforce development programs across 15 federal agencies. Small businesses face overlapping bureaucratic certification processes and complicated paperwork challenges whenever they try to work with the government.

President Trump’s reform and reorganization plan will change that, with the goal of making the federal government more responsive and accountable to the American people. Last year, the President signed an executive order directing the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to work on a step-by-step plan to reorganize the executive branch. Yesterday, the President discussed key reforms with members of his Cabinet.

President Trump is making government more efficient, effective, and accountable.
