The findings of the survey held by the University Cyprus are revealing

Greek Cypriots want Cyprus peace talks to succeed

Despite UN-brokered talks aiming to reunite Cyprus hitting a rocky road, most Greek Cypriots still want a positive outcome to the peace process.

This is what a survey carried out by the University of Cyprus Centre for Field Studies between April 19 to 29 has shown.

The data was collected through telephone interviews with a random sample of 505 Greek Cypriots over 18 years old and with a 4.3% margin of error.

A total of 55.57% of those polled wished for the process to have a positive outcome, 19.06% said they were uncertain and 25.35% did not want the talks to lead to an agreement.

In addition, most Greek Cypriots do not see proposals that have been made public on the issue of security and guarantees in a federal Cyprus as negative.

Nonetheless, a large percentage did reserve their right to express an opinion.

The survey said the UN are expected to propose a compromise formula to the two sides on the issue of security and guarantees presupposing four points.

And, as expected, the first point, which was the Abolition of Turkey’s unilateral right to military intervention in Cyprus was overwhelmingly accepted by 76.91%.

The second, proposing the signing of a Treaty of Amity among Greece-Turkey-Federal Cyprus was accepted by 27.95%, followed by 23.88% of those who would neither accept nor reject it.

In addition, 22.50% fully accepted it, 15.22% fully rejected it and 10.45% just rejected it.

The third point provided the substitution of the guarantees treaty with a treaty of strictly applying the solution.

This was neither accepted nor rejected by 29.58%, with those accepting it being 25.77%, those fully accepting it 22.56%, those that just rejected it 11.66% and 10.42% fully rejected it.

The reduction of the Turkish army in Cyprus to 650 personnel (as Turdik should be under the constitution) and of the Greek army to 950 (as Eldik was in the past) was fully accepted by 36.87%.

Those who just accepted it were 21.86%, and those who neither accepted nor rejected it were 13.63%. It was just rejected by 6.14% and fully rejected by 21.49%.

As for the possibility of a unitary state, this was accepted as a satisfactory solution by 58.63%, tolerated as a last resort by 22.15% and rejected by 19.22%.
