Cyprus, Greece and Israel get summit underway


A Trilateral Summit involving Cyprus, Greece and Israel got underway in Thessaloniki on Thursday with the leaders set to discuss a range of issues including energy and stronger economic ties.

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades arrived in Thessaloniki on Thursday morning to attend the summit and sign the Thessaloniki Joint Declaration alongside Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Summit`s agenda includes energy – including the EastMed, the Euro-Asia Interconnector and the renewable energy sources, the Middle East issue, economy and growth – focusing on innovation and start-ups, youth entrepreneurship and new training and vocational programmes, telecommunications and the environment – including water resources management, maritime environment and climate changes.

The Cyprus problem will also be discussed.

A press release issued by the Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus said that the Trilateral Summit, which will take place at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall will also be attended by Tsipras and Netanyahu.

The Cypriot delegation will also comprise Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, Energy Minister Yiorgos Lakkotrypis, Agricuture, Rural Development and Environment Ministers Nicos Kouyialis, Transport, Communications and Works Minister Marios Demetriades, Presidential Commissioner for Humanitarian Issues and Overseas Cypriots Photis Photiou and Deputy Government Spokesman Victoras Papadopoulos.

The three countries` Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Energy, Agriculture, Transport and Diaspora will have meetings on the sidelines of the Summit, which will begin at midday.

Tsipras and Netanyahu had already met on Thursday morning while Anastasiades was expected to arrive at the venue at 11:30am.

At midday, President Anastasiades will have a bilateral meeting with Netanyahu.

At 12:30pm, the Trilateral Summit will take place and at 1:45pm, the three leaders will make statements to the media and sign the Thessaloniki Joint Declaration.

After that the plenary of the Trilateral Summit will attend a working lunch.

Anastasiades and the members of the Cypriot delegation will return to Cyprus in the evening.
