Turkey has conducted hundreds of cases of torture and thousands of rights violations between 2010 and 2019, a new report issued by Turkey’s Human Rights Association (İHD) revealed last week as cited by Cyprus-based outlet Avhal.

According to İHD chairman in the majority-Kurdish city of Diyarbakir in southeast Turkey, Abdullah Zeytun, 690 out of 3,569 rights violations that were issued to his organization were related to torture, Mezopotamya news agency reported.

Around 47 percent of the allegations came from prisoners who said they had been subjected to torture or mistreatment by wardens.

In addition, the report cites alleged mistreatment by authorities including cases of beating, continuous hitting on a single part of the body, bodily injury, firearm injuries, as well as twisting testicles, foot whipping, beating with a hose, and choking, Zeytun said, cited by Avhal.

In 2002, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to show “zero tolerance” toward torture, promising to pass laws that will ban the practice.

His Justice and Development Party (AKP) launched a peace process in 2013 with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in order to end the conflict that has claimed more than 40,000 lives since 1984.

But since the collapse of the accords in 2015, and following a 2016 failed coup, reports of torture have resurfaced.
